The causes of varicose veins can be inherited or acquired. Pregnancy, the female hormone estrogen, birth control pills, heavy lifting and trauma have also been associated with varicose veins. Occupations that require prolonged sitting or standing, as well as obesity can aggravate varicose vein symptoms.
Varicose veins form when the valves within a healthy vein weaken and no longer function properly. This allows blood to flow backward (down the leg). The resulting increased pressure further weakens the vein causing it to balloon outward and be visible and painful.
Many people seek only cosmetic treatment to reduce the appearance of the varicose vein. But treatment will usually relieve the symptoms of swelling, pain, heaviness, itching, cramping or restless legs. If left untreated however, varicose veins can lead to very significant problems such as ulceration or blood clots. Blood clots can clog the vein stopping blood flow completely or break free and travel to the heart, lungs or brain. This results in life threatening heart attack, pulmonary embolism or stroke.
