Spider veins, or telangiactasis, are very thin, small purple, blue or red veins that can occur anywhere on the legs and face. Spider veins can be isolated or in clusters and generally look like spider webs or starbursts. These spider veins are more common in woman and often after pregnancy. It is estimated that nearly half of the adult women in the United States have spider veins. While less frequent, men may also have spider veins. There are usually reticular or “feeder” veins, which are larger and have a greenish color, feeding the spider veins or telangiactasis. Special equipment, available at the Vein Center, is often needed to see these reticular veins. While mostly a cosmetic problem, spider veins can also cause pain.
Spider veins are caused by a variety of factors, including heredity, pregnancy, the female hormone estrogen, weight gain, long periods of standing or sitting, some medications and trauma. The “gold” standard for treatment is sclerotherapy. Laser and light treatments are generally used only on the smallest veins, require multiple treatments, are painful, expensive and can rarely successfully treat the feeder veins.
